Suhara Jewel Art is a shining example to all aspiring Malaysia entrepreneurs of how a business can be taken from humble beginnings into elevated ranks of high society
Co-founded by the husband and wife team of Suhara Omar and Helmut Leitenbauer, it started as a small enterprise in 2007, selling quality fashion jewellery from a cart at the Mont’ Kiara and Bangsar Shopping Centre bazaars on weekends and during festive seasons.
The combination of Suhara’s creativity in design and Helmut’s marketing savvy ensured that the distinctive pieces quickly garnered a following among clientele eager for accessories that would make unique fashion statements.
Malaysia Airlines was one of its first corporate clients to appreciate this, and commissioned the company to design sets for its repertoire of in-flight products.
By 2009, the enterprising partners had acquired a client base that sounded like Who’s Who of Malaysia, giving them the confidence to open a boutique in Bangsar Shopping Centre. They also took their business to the Middle East, servicing the demands of their clientele through an appointed agency.
In 2010, it entered into an agreement with direct-selling e-commerce company QNet to design exclusive pieces to be marketed by the company under Umayal Collection Label
This year, it made the decision to open another boutique in the Intermark.
Suhara’s design inspiration comes from various aspects of nature, predominantly underwater creatures like the coral, seahorses, nautilus and stingray. She is also enthused by the lines and shapes from other characteristics of nature, such as leaves, feathers, branches and the like.
Leitenbauer complements her artistic side with a brisk, business-like approach to production, marketing and distribution that ensured the continued growth of the brand. He is also instrumental in the push to create a line for men under the Suhara Jewel Art Brand, which is in the pipeline and is expected to be launched next year.
